Sumi-e art (sumi = ink, e = picture). “The Sumiye” is one visual expression of Zen. It makes the spirit of the object move on the paper. “…each brush-stroke must beat with the pulsation of a living being. It must be living too.” William Barrett, Selected Writings of D.T. Suzuki, Zen Buddhism (Doubleday, First Three Leaves Press Edition, 2006.) p. 336.

deb3321 is pleased to present contemporary
Sumi-E Master Artist
Master Kwon, Yong Seob.

On Saturday, January 11 at 5:30 pm, Mr. Kwon will create a Sumi-e work (“gwonyongseop ink”). The painting will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Mr. Kwon’s art will also be on display at deb3321 through February 8, 2014.

The influence of Asian philosophy and its arts can be seen in the paintings of the French Impressionists; Lautrec, Gaugin, van Gogh, Mary Cassatt then to Arthur Wesley Dow to John Cage.  The influence continues
and is omnipresent.

Additional paintings on display in the exhibition will include a few works by Mr. Kwon’s wife,Yeo, Young Nan and Mr. Kwon’s student, Shana Han. Ms. Han will also be the interpreter for the evening’s performance.

Mr. Kwon is popularly known as the Korea's Dok Do island painter who first held the Keum Kang sketch of one of the most beautiful mountains in North Korea.  He has performed this theme, “Beautiful Island Kok-do” throughout Korea and the US.  He is therefore known as “Dongkok".

Shana Han Art Official Website Launched

In the moment,

I believe that we can see our true nature (true self) by eliminating unnecessary thoughts. When I make gestural painting (drawing) in 30 seconds or 1 minute, I can stay in meditative state. The fact that I am encouraged to let go of the brush strokes which I perceive as mistakes helps me not being attached to my own art works. That's why I love Sumukhwa (Ink wash painting)!

Landscapes "in the moments".... It will continue~

I have not gone to an art school for my education. Sometimes, I felt insecure and conscious about my works because I have just started drawing and painting regularly a year ago.

Does it really matter how my paintings look or how others will think about it?
Would I stop doing it because my works are not considered to be good?
But the answer was "no, it doesn't matter and no, I won't stop".... I have to and this is what I want.

I travel a lot for business and I realized that this is the best time to paint!
Here, I will keep uploading "in the moments" series of landscapes from different places.
I find silence and peace in my mind while I am painting. I exist in the moments.
There is no past or future.

My dancing brush (music: Compa Galletano)

(Please play YouTube video at the bottom)
I love Cuban music, and the dance. When I draw or paint, I always listen to Latin music, preferably Cuban music that gives me groove. It's almost like I am dancing through the brush.
And perhaps, that's why I love gesture drawings with quick movements and the beauty of ink wash painting. Once I make a brush stroke, there's no way to change. It's just like the dance. You are in the moment. You dance as you feel and it doesn't stay. If you hear another good song, you dance differently as you feel. Isn't that beautiful?

The inspiration

Great thanks to beautiful dancers and great musicians.

Announcing the first ever Lincoln Heights Biennale at deb3321

deb3321 is pleased to present as its second exhibition the works from the attendees of the studio who will participate in the first ever Lincoln Heights Biennale.  This will coincide with deb3321's one year anniversay, since opening the studio's door to other artists.

Works in a variety of media primarily representational will range from graphic statements of the Los Angeles' ignored but omnipresent; the painterly bravado and/or sublime, the sensual painted portrait, scratchboard markings of popular mythic metaphors or philosophical allusion; to the remarkable gestural drawings of the quickly apprehended; photographs that infer the object though its signs, shadows and environment, and photographs that place the space.  More surprises to come.
While the artists are mature, for most this will be their first public exhibition--a true emerging celebrating their growth.  This exhibition also supports the mission of the studio, to create an artist controlled community--where artists place art where it belongs--under their vision and intelligence.

Artists include:  Erika Olden, Grace Umali, Shana Han, Ray Indolos, Roger Stephenson, Rika Everett, Christine Haenen and more.

My passion to sumi ink and brush....

Shana Han, aka Hyehyeun Han in Korean, was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1981. Her family moved to the country side where they had their cow milk business and she enjoyed taking photos and painting the nature, animals and insects. She always dreamed to become a painter.

She was sent back to Seoul city (the capital of Korea) for education since the middle school and she graduated from Konkuk University with two bachelors’ degrees in microbial engineering and business. And then, she worked at a pharmaceutical company as an international business and marketing manager. After resigning from her position, she moved to the United States for continuing education, completed contract management and international business operations and management at UC Irvine extension and established a business, Hansderma, Inc. She is specialized in international business development and trading in the field of cosmetics, medical device and medical esthetic field.
She regularly takes art classes at community colleges and practice figure drawings at deb3321 studio. Her works are influenced by her Korean heritage and are mostly done in ink wash style with sumi ink. She currently spends most of her free time studying art and painting, practicing Chan meditation and salsa dancing.
