Sumi-e art (sumi = ink, e = picture). “The Sumiye” is one visual expression of Zen. Master Kwon, Yong Seob.
On Saturday, January 11 at 5:30 pm, Mr. Kwon will create a Sumi-e work (“gwonyongseop ink”). The painting will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Mr. Kwon’s art will also be on display at deb3321 through February 8, 2014.
The influence of Asian philosophy and its arts can be seen in the paintings of the French Impressionists; Lautrec, Gaugin, van Gogh, Mary Cassatt then to Arthur Wesley Dow to John Cage. The influence continues
and is omnipresent.
Additional paintings on display in the exhibition will include a few works by Mr. Kwon’s wife,Yeo, Young Nan and Mr. Kwon’s student, Shana Han. Ms. Han will also be the interpreter for the evening’s performance.
Mr. Kwon is popularly known as the Korea's Dok Do island painter who first held the Keum Kang sketch of one of the most beautiful mountains in North Korea. He has performed this theme, “Beautiful Island Kok-do” throughout Korea and the US. He is therefore known as “Dongkok".
While self-taught but with vigorous dedication, Mr. Kwon was influenced by Ki-Chang Kim a well recognized artist in Korea as well as worldwide.
Mr. Kwon has held over 50 individual exhibitions and participated in approximately 200 group activities. He has traveled presenting/performing his paintings all over the world, including the Philippines, China, Brazil, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Australia to name a few. He had participated in the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action in the US (9/11 Ground Zero Sketch: http://www.gzcenter.org) as part of a peace delegation.
He has received an award for the day from South Korean Prime Minister in his participation with the UN Volunteers from South Korea. He has also received a Cultural Award from President George Bush. Mr. Kwon has made public appearance on Korean National TV as well as Korean US television. He also volunteers as an art therapist.
